Football Manager Diary – Preseason
Looking at the side I decide early on to set myself a little rule that I probably wont manage to stick to. when playing FM you can expand the amount of your transfer budget by setting deals to take place over 4 years rather than payment upfront. This makes it slightly easier to make signings. For this window, I only want to use this while trying to sign a Goalkeeper, everyone else must be through the normal budget.
Straight away I send the scouts out to find a goalkeeper, and to check out the free transfer list. I’m big into scouting, and in this first stint I have over 500 players that I look at, including
– any players on the free transfer list that show as Wanted by another club
– any player interested in coming to me with a value of 5 million plus
– any player on the transfer or loan list with a value down to 500k
This means the first few weeks of the season I get a ton of scouting reports.
Some players that I go in for straight away are Keisuke Honda, whose contract runs out in January. I offer him a massive deal as Man United are also rumored to be interested. I also go in for Wilfred Zaha from United, who’s on the loan list. Villa and Celtic follow me with offers for him.
A bid comes in for Diame – 3 mill from Marseille. I ask for 10 million.
I let my assistant take care of the friendlies. He bags early wins 3-1 at home to Luzern and 6-0 away to Peterhead.
Guy Demel becomes first out of the door, going to Nantes for 300k. Nice bit of budget freed up from his wages. Marseille come back and offer 3.8 million for Diame. I am about to reject it, and realize there’s no button to. Hes got a release clause ggdjkdjshs
Thankfully I offer, and he signs a new contract. 10 million would have been acceptable to rebuild the team. 3.8 million was nothing and could have been a disaster.
I set the season bonuses
Zaha goes to Villa on loan. Cunt.
Sign a couple of young lads on frees called Manuel Giandonato and Connor Hunte who my scouts like the look of.
Maiga signs for Bordeaux for 2.9 million, and I make the signing of Sid Keita on a free. Hes just a squad player, providing me with a defensive midfield option
Assistant loses 2-1 to Lazio at home, 0-0 vs Huddersfield away, and 2-2 at Ascoli
My scouts find an interesting player. I guess hes a Utility man?
I finally make the first signing, with Yann Sommer becoming my new Goalkeeper.
He’s followed by another free transfer signing, though this one is more of a 1st team prospect – Yossi Benayoun
In the Capital One Cup we get drawn against….
