Football Manager Diary Season 2 – Preseason – Rip it up, Fuck it up
So here we go with the roundup of the preseason for my second year in charge of West Ham. Last season we managed a mighty 7th place finish in the Premier League mainly thanks to CROUCHY and CARROLL firing on all cylinders, but we did crash out of both cups early
As always with me, I cant resist tearing apart my team and ruining it by bringing in worse players, but hey ho here you go.
In a shocking move that I dont get a picture of because I forget and then cant reaccess the screeen CROUCHY wins signing of the season after his 800k move. What a guy.
We also get out Player of The Year Award
The board ask for my expectations
I’m gonna give Europa League qualifying a bash. This should mean a 6th or 7th place finish depending what happens in the cups. Last year the two cups were won by Norwich (FA) and Chelsea (Capital One). Unfortunately we didnt get a place, because Spurs won the Europa League last year, so theyre in instead of us.
So onto transfers, I dont want to bore you with all the negotiations, which take me ages, so Im gonna break down the outs and the ins.
Matt Jarvis – Just wasnt playing, and was on 35k per week. A decent fee for himJack Collison – He was an able deputy for my main CM’s last year, but I need to bring in new ones so as a fringe player his head was on the block
George McCartney, Mladen Petric – Both could have been decent deputys, but wanted 35k and 20k a week respectively. Better to get them off the squad.
Callum Driver, Danny Potts, Dylan Tombides, Leo Chambers – All young players released
Matthias Fanimo, Blair Turgott, Elliot Lee, Manuel Giandonato, Sean Maguire – Just young lads out on loan. Of those I can only see Giandonato and Maguire making it so will be keeping an eyeJordan Spence – Again an able deputy, but not getting time.
Adrian – Was on 20k a week and not playing. I wanted to bring in a reserve keeper who was younger so he was sent packing
James Collins – Out on loan to Palace who are paying his entire 35k week wages. He was decent and has decent stats, but its similar to Collison where I needed to bring in new defenders so he was going to get pushed to the side.
Joe Cole – His contract on 55k a week was up and I sign him to a 25k one, then his stats took a dive over the end of season and so Swanseas offer to pay his full wages was snapped at
The only one I didnt really want to sell was Mohamed Diame. The jewel in my midfield, he asked for a better move, I promised him Europa League qualification, he asked when, I said this season, he said he didnt think we were good enough and asked to leave. I wasnt having a unhappy player round, so I let him got for as much as I could get, 7.75mill.
Thankfully he got replaced.
Vladimir Seman – 350k – Delighted with this, theres nothing better than a young semen. Since I signed him Ive had a constant stream of requests for him on loan despite him not being listed. Even if he fails at 350k hes a bargain. Not gonna let him go out yet, want to see how he adapts.
Brede Hangeland – 750k – With Fulham going down they had quite a few players I looked at, Berbatov and Ruiz being the main two but ultimately I decided the best option was this guy at 750k, and I managed to negotiate his wages down from 50k a week as well. A great strong defender who will probably grab a few goals. At 6’6″ he also gives another threat at corners. Gonna be a few more this season I hope.
Nacer Chadli – 3.3 million – If Im honest I’m a bit disappointed in this one. I scouted him several times and my scouts loved him rating him as having the potential to be a 4.5 star player. Where I am happy is he can play on either wing, he’s a decent flair based player – but Im probably going to look at increasing his crossing. 6’2″ though, get in the box on corners lad once you learn to head.
Juanmi – 1.2 million – A ridiculous contract for this lad on 12.75k a week, but I needed it in order to sign him at an absolute bargain 1.2 million. He’s only 5’7″ but he could potentially be a long term replacement for Crouchy in a little and large partnership with Carroll. Gonna be bringing him into the team a lot this year. I’m considering training him as a winger as well.
Michael Bradley – 3.1 million – Delighted with this one. 3.1 was a great fee, and while he wasnt originally bought to replace Diame he will probably end up being the main guy who does. A tough presence in the midfield and oh hey, hes 6’2!
Dejan Stojanovic – Free – Direct replacement for Adrian. Young with a bit of potential. Will give him some cup games and let him play in the reserves. Might even bring him on late for corners given hes 6’5″ 🙂
Matej Vydra – Free – Young lad whos a bit of a journeyman given that Im his 7th career club. He’s been at Udinese for the last 3 years but out on loan at Watford and last year West Brom, where he didnt set the world on fire. However hes young and can play on the wings if needed (after working on his crossing). will be the third striker till Juanmi makes the step up.
Seamus Coleman – 5 million – A signing that Im a bit split on if Im honest. I like his stats, he’s ok at crossing with decent pace, and can play a Wing Back which fits into one of the formations I’m looking at. But I’m not sure If I should have given Joey O’Brien another season to play and then bring in a right back instead of paying 5million for one now. Ultimately O’Brien is going nowhere as he can play LB and RB but Coleman is going to be 1st choice.
Wilfred Zaha – Loan – Pretty happy with this. His wages are relatively low and he can play either side. I missed out on Januzaj who chose Norwich over me, so I was a bit worried about getting Zaha but I went in as soon as his other loan finished and was his only choice. I’m gonna try and butter him up a bit during the season to get him onside if I decide to try and sign him, but I havent got an agreement in place.
Joe Ledley – 3.4 million – Wanted to make a welsh signing, and saw he was looking for around 20k wages and couldnt resist. I signed him as a Key Player as I was having wage bill issues at the time and it was the only way I could offer 20k (lol) but I’ll be looking at getting that down ASAP. Ultimately he is my replacement for Collison in and out of the team.
Derik – 275k – As part of my preseason scouting I looked at all of Barca and Real Madrid’s B teams and this was one of the players that came up as interested. He was only 375k and wanted 10k a week wages so I figured I’d see how he developed.
My final signing was made after Diame left, and will probably be my long term solution for my midfield
Morgan Schneiderlin – 7.25 million. He signed for Bayern last year for 10.5 million from Southampton, so he’s got Premiership experience. It was between him and 2 other players to spend the Diame money, but the others got rejected as too young, and too attacking. Schneiderlin is a pretty good midfielder and I’m goping that he’s going to dominate.
With that done lets take a look at the squad as it stands
Heres the three Formations I will be using this season. Ive also put in the players I think will be used mainly for the formation
