Football Manager Diary S1 – November to remember. Or not?

Football Manager 2014 LogoSo we’re now into November, and running away with the leagure. We’ve only lost 1 game in the league – infact we’ve only dropped 7 points of a possible 48.

Bristol are just too good for the conference

2nd November 2013 – Bristol Rovers (1st) vs Hereford (3rd)

I seem to be forever playing 3rd placed teams.

Within 2 minutes we’re behind, a through ball is cut out by Irie-i but deflects back to a Hereford player, and he plays a perfect ball through and its fired past Arnold.

We have Brunt tho, a long ball finds him and he skips past the keeper and taps in to make it 1-1

Hereford are pressuring tho, and beat the offside trap to score. I start to throw men and subs at the game, but to no good. Hereford fully deserve a 2-1 win.

Bristol Rovers 1-2 Hereford
Brunt (11) – James (2, 23)
League Position – 1st

Spoke too soon.

I offer Oliver Norburn a contract termination. He’s on 1k a week which is high in my squad and with a wage budget of only 18k is well too high for someone who doesnt play. He has played only 4 games plus 4 off the bench and not impressed. He’s been on the transfer list for a while and no ones bid. He accepts to go for 18k, so he’s out.

5th November 2013 – Aldershot (24th) vs Bristol Rovers

Just what we need, a match against the bottom of the league side. I’m playing a few of the lesser players in this match including a debut for loan midfielder Craig Storrie whos been injured since I brought him in.

9 mins in its another loanee bagging a goal, as Jackson heads in a corner and its 1-0 Bristol. The lead is doubled when a neat move plays Brown in on the wing, and he crosses for Guillaume, who had started the move and finishes it.

3 minutes into the second half White and Harrold combine for the latter to score. White then bags a goal himself, smashing in from range when a corner is cleared.

Its a dominant performance.

Aldershot 0-4 Bristol Rovers
Jackson (9), Guilaume (28), Harrold (48), White (57)
League Position – 1st

A huge match next, as a win will put us in the Fa Cup 2nd round. Money from a cup run would be huge for us. York are a league above us, but bottom of that league.

9th November 2013 – Bristol Rovers vs York – FA Cup 1st Round

2 minutes in we’re behind as Michael Smith heads into his own net for a corner. FFS. Who is Michael Smith again?

23 - Smith

Fucking acid face

Brunt spurns a good chance after a great ball from Sinnott. 28 minutes and we are back in it, a free kick is taken short, and then played through to Irie-Bi and he smashes in. 3 minutes later its 2-1, a long ball from Smith finds Brunt, he plays in Guillaume and the frenchman scores! Just before half time its 2-2 – a deep free kick is headed in. FFS lads. Just as I’m readying a team talk tho Guillaume plays in Brunt, his touch is heavy but falls in the path of Harrold and he smashes in!

What a first half, 3-2 to us.

9 minutes into the 2nd its 4-2 as Gonzalez smashes in. Arnold then makes a great save from York

Brunt gets injured, so White is on.

Guilaume bags our 5th and his hat trick after Harrold plays him in. Surely we’re through! York make it 5-3 tho when they get behind the defence

Bristol Rovers 5-3 York
Irie-Bi (29) – Guilaume (31, 55, 71), Harrold (45+1) – Smith own goal (2), Platt (44), Fletcher (86)

We had 19 shots to their 9. Fully deserved to beat the higher league opponents

We get 18k for the win. Woop a weeks wages at least. The draw is out too…

85 - Cup Draw

Theyre a league 1 side, so one of the top teams we could have faced – but theyre 22nd in their league. If we can beat them we go into the hat for the 3rd round and a potential match against a Premiership team.

16th November 2014 – Forest Green (9th) vs Bristol Rovers (1st)

Brunt is back from injury already which is good as I can only name 4 subs because of injuries / international duty.

A long ball for Forest Green and they smash in after only 2 mins. 1-0 to them. FFS.

McChrystal in defence, and Brunt both pick up light injuries. Sinnott then hits a good chance at the keeper as we start to press. Guillaume hits the bar, but look at the reactions

Brunt Reaction Forest Green

Just onside, great work Brunt!

Gonzalez plays in Brunt, but he gets tackled and the ball falls to White who gets us the lead! 2-1.

In the 2nd half Arnold makes a couple of saves. Brunt goes throgh 1v1 and his shot is saved. But it doesnt matter, as thats it.

Forest Green 1-2 Bristol Rovers
Hughes (3) – Brunt (30), White (41)
League Position – 1st

15 shots to their 4. Easy

McChrystal is out for 3 weeks with the injury he picked up.

86 - Guillaume Contract

Totally deserves to play in the league above next year so cant complain about this.

Also bring another loanee in

87 - Beardsley

In the FA trophy we get drawn against Farnborough, from one of the leagues below us.

23rd November 2013 – AFC Telford (16th) vs Bristol Rovers (1st)

Beardsleys going to go straight into the 1st team for this one.

A chipped ball to Brunt from Lockyer gets headed in to give us an 8th minute lead. Arnold makes a couple of decent saves. Beardsley gets a good chance when played in by Sinnott but his shot is blocked, the ball falls to Sinnott and he shoots but its blocked and falls back to him with the keeper down he has a tap in. 2-0. Guillaume then plays in Brunt and he makes it 3-0

Into the second half and I make a few subs and take the foot off the gas.

Big mistake.

Telford get a goal back in the 75th, then in the last minute get another. In the dying seconds they throw everything forward but we hold on!

At the team talk I assertively say it was a Jekyll and Hyde performance, and its a really mixed response.

88 - Team Talk

Telford 2-3 Bristol Rovers
Grand (75) Macken (90) – Brunt (8, 25), Sinnott (19)
League Position – 1st

We had 21 shots to their 5. Unacceptable.

Irie-Bi is out for a couple of weeks. Thats a disaster as theres no one else who can play DM.

26th November 2013 – Bristol Rovers (1st) vs Braintree (8th)

I’m throwing Storrie in as DM.

8 mins in and some good passing leaves Guillaume in space and he is found by Gonzalez and scores. Guillaume is put in again but his shot is saved this time. Brunt then plays in Guilaume, but he gets tackled and it falls to Brunt who smashes in! Brown then crosses for White who takes it down – the keeper has dived so White can tap in!

Into the 2nd half, and Storrie bags a goal from the edge of the area. 6 minutes later Brunt plays in Guillaume, he plays to White who smashes in!

Arnold makes a good save when they get in past the defence, then one of their centre backs picks up 2 yellows in quick succession when White gets past him twice. I bring on 2 strikers for the 2 strikers whove done really well.

They play a long ball up, Jackson slides it as Arnold comes out, the ball runs past Arnold and the braintree stiker has a tap in! The two strikers Ive brought on are looking complacent and uninterested according to my assistant. Fucks sake. Nothing else happens for the rest of the match.

Bristol Rovers 5-0 Braintree
Guillaume (8) Brunt (15) White (28, 48), Storrie (46)
League Position – 1st

11 shots to their 9 – good job my strikers are fucking awesome.

Last up for the month Ive got the FA Trophy.

30th November 2013 – Bristol Rovers vs Farnborough (FA Trophy)

I’m playing Mildenhall in goal, and the two back up strikers Harrold and Beardsley. We are 1-14 favourites, lol.

Takes 28 minutes for a goal, Beardsley scoring after Harrold purs him in. Storrie decides to make it difficult for us by getting himself sent off. At half time I tell the lads to improve.

7 mins in Guillaume plays in Harrold and he scores. He gets played in again 6 minutes later and scores again. Jackson then gets one just 60 seconds later heading in a corner. Harrold has a chance for a hat trick but shoots wide. That’ll do boys.

Bristol Rovers 4-0 Farnborough
Beardsley (28), Harrold (52, 58), Jackson (60)

Another great performance from Guillaume. He’s sick.

Jacksons injury puts him out for a few weeks, longer than is let in his loan deal so I send him back to Boro.

Heres how the league stands

89 - League Nov

The board are happy

93 - Board

Tho that finance thing is worrying. We really need a good cup run to get that back on track.

No suprises for player of the month

90 - POTM

Or the Young Player

91 - YPOTM

Or even the manager!

92 - MOTM

Feels good to be back on track.

A quick check shows Peter Reid top of League 2 tho. Damn. No gloating for me

  • Phil Evans

Bristol Rovers 5-2 York – thought you aid it was 5-3?

And where are the scores for the Bristol Rovers – Braintree match? I had to count them myself.

I mean come on, I expect better attention to detail that this, regardless of your league position and cheap wristbands.
