Football Manager Diary S2 – October – Ding Dong Peter Reid is dead

Football Manager 2014 LogoOh sweet sweet revenge. How good you taste, like a summers morning.

At the start of the game we had a job interview with Oxford. They rejected me and instead signed Peter Fucking Reid as manager. I swore revenge, and last month I finally got my chance

225 Oxford

And it feels good

I’ve got to admit I’ve made some mistakes tho. The signings of Derbyshire and Dunn were lead by the heart rather than the head, the thrill of some players who I’ve watched play for years brought in for the sake of it. Outside of them I’m delighted with my squad, Lawrence is looking a real star, Fletcher looks like he will end up making a good strike-force with Brunt and there’s a few good youngsters.

As a result I’m happy to put White, Mozika and Bradley on the transfer list, but equally happy for them to stay.

4-10-14 Bristol Rovers (2nd) vs Cheltenham (16th)

Worth saying that if results went wrong for us we could drop as low as 11th. The division is that tight.

Derbyshires getting a start, and he misses a good chance in the 11th minute when put through 1v1. He misses so many of those.

Brunt gets a chance but shoots at the keeper, and its an uneventful 1st half ending 0-0. Into the second and Brunt gets a chance straight at the keeper, but gets put through again minutes laer and makes no mistake with the finish – 1-0!

Fletcher comes on for Derbyshire, but its Brunt who gets the next goal, smashing in a rebound from a corner. Cheltenham press and Arnold has to make a great save, and we hold on. Another good win.

Cheltenham 0-2 Bristol Rovers
Brunt (53, 71)
League Position – 2nd

After the match I do some edits on some of my squads status, changing some players from Key Players to 1st team players, and some of the youths down from squad rotation to hot prospect.

A few of them complain, but all react fine when I say they need to just carry on doing their job – with 1 exception

226 - Dunn contract

Calm down Dunny. You’re getting a start in the next match

7-10-14 – Northampton vs Bristol Rovers – Johnstons trophy

The Johnstones trophy is one for League 1 and 2 clubs. Northampton are in our division.

I’m playing more of a fringe team, with the players who havent played as much this season

227 Tactics

Northampton take the lead, Smith bending in a free kick – but we’re back on terms shortly after with O’Neil crossing for Leghait to smash home. Aside from that its a boring 1st half.

Into the second and its dead again, I throw on subs including Lipman for his debut, Guillaume for a rare appearence and Horsfeld. With 7 minutes to go Northampton burst forward but O’Brien makes a great save. With just 2 minutes left good work by Chantler and Lipman down the left ends with Horsfield on the end of a cross and smashing home the winner!

Northampton 1-2 Bristol Rovers
Smith (13) – Leghait (17), Horsfield (89)

After the match I get some news

I fine him a weeks wages, he isnt happy

229 - Dunn unfair 230 - Dunn 1 231 - Dunn 2 232 - Dunn 3

Cunt. He spent a year without a club before I signed him. Rot in the reserves you shit.

11-10-14 – Accrington (20th) vs Bristol Rovers (2nd)

All the 1st team players back in – including Derbyshire.

Its Derbyshire giving us the lead – Lawrence stealing the ball and putting him in – thats his 1st goal of the season. He puts the ball in for a second, but is offside. Accrington get an equaliser, the ball bobbling off a defender and they smash in. Horsfield does well to break up an Accrington counter, then Arnold makes a great save as they press. Just before half time we hit the bar directly from a corner.

Accrington are all over us in the second half, despite us making a few changes they constantly pressure, and takethe lead with 12 minutes to go with Hamill scoring from a rebound. We get back on terms with Guthrie heading in a corner. With just 4 minutes to go Lawrence steals it, plays it through and Derbyshire runs onto it and scores! Is that a winner?

It is!

Derbyshire bags man of the match in his best performance so far by miles

Accrington 2-3 Bristol Rovers
Bowerman (35), Hamill (79) – Derbyshire (25,86), Guthrie (83)
League Position – 1st!!!!

Top of the table!

I tell Derbyshire well done

233 - Derbyshire

18-10-14 – Mansfield (8th) vs Bristol Rovers (1st)

Derbyshire isnt fully fit so I start Leghait. He gives us the lead smashing in a Brunt cross. Lawrence makes it two with a screamer from the edge of the box, but Mansfield go up our end and get a goal back. 3 goals in 3 minutes, and it dies down into halftime.

6 mins into the second half Mansfield equalize, with a screamer that hits the post then comes back off our keeper into the net. Shortly after its 4-2 with a cross headed in. I throw on Derbyshire, but he cant make a difference.

Mansfield 4-2 Bristol Rovers
Glen (24,52), Cooper (54), Fleming (67) – Leghait (22), Lawrence (23)
League Position – 5th

Fuck. One bad result and drop 4 places. I shoulda started Derbyshire.

I’m going to try something different for the next match

21-10-14 – Bristol Rovers (5th) vs Kidderminster (12th)

The new thing to try is a new formation

234 - formation

The first half is pretty highlight free, but according to the stats we are bossing it. Are we missing a second striker? hmmm

Its only a minute after half time when we get the lead, with the two attacking midfielders linking up

236 - Gonz flick

Wowzer, what a backheel flick by Gonzalez and Lawrence smashes it in. Atkinson gets our second after a cross from Guthrie. As I prepare to bring on Guillaume for a rare appearence Kidderminster pull a goal back from only their 2nd shot of the match. Thankfully Guillaume combines with Lawrence and Guillaume gets our 3rd!

Bristol Rovers 3-1 Kidderminster
Lawrence (46), Atkinson (76), Guillaume (84) – Storer (83)
League Position – 3rd

After his goal I decide to tell Guillaume that he would make a good coach, but he seems to want to be a manager. I’d love to keep him at the club.

25-10-14 – Bristol Rovers (3rd) vs Southend (8th)

A pretty poor game, Southend take the lead on 27 minutes but we equalise 2 minutes later through Lawrence with a good finish from the edge of the box.

2 minutes into the second half we take the lead with Sweeney heading in a corner – but thats the only highlight. A really boring match

Bristol Rovers 2-1 Southend
Lawrence (29), Sweeney (47) – Hurst (27)
League Position – 3rd

My assistant has been offering Dunn around but found no takers, so he arranges a compensation package of 24k for him

235 dunn

So Dunn signed on 1/9/14 and left 26/10/14 meaning a total of 49 days. In that time he earned 9.8k, plus the 24k compensation meaning a total of approximately 34k. He played 2 games and scored 1 goal, meaning we paid him 17k per appearance.

Last match of the month is the FA Cup. We need a run in this to get some money.

31-10-14 Bristol Rovers vs Wimbledon – FA Cup

Despite the fact we need the win I’m playing a few fringe players back in our normal 41212 formation, including Lockyer and O’Neil in defence, Lipman in the Am position and our young keeper O’Brien in goal.

Looking at their team I notice one name

O’Neil has a shot well saved after getting in on the overlap, and from the corner Tom Parkes scores! is he happy?

24 - Parkes

Course he is!

Not much else happens up to half time. I bring on Fletcher for Brunt whos taken a slight knock.

O’Brien makes an early save as Wimbledon push on. Derbyshire picks up a knock so I bring on Leghait for him, but the game is shit

Bristol Rovers 1-0 Wimbledon
Parkes (9)

We’re through. Holy shit tho lately our games are only highlights for goals.

Heres the board confidence for the month

236 - board conf oct 14

Holy shit 124k loss. Looking at the finances I can only see that the board loans are effecting us a lot, we pay out 128k a month on them alone.

Heres the table

237 - Table

Tight at the top

We finish nowhere in the months awards. Must sort that next month.
