Fuck I love this scene
With Breaking Bad having wrapped up recently its sparked up the usual debate over what the best TV show of all time is. While some point to the usual suspects like The Sopranos or The Wire, or even other shows like Friends and The Simpsons, in my opinion there is no show greater than The Shield
I’d never really watched Seinfeld until recently, despite its fame as one of the top rated American sitcoms of all time, but recently Ive been marathoning through the entirety of the show and I have to say in the words of Larry David….
Its pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good
It’s actually my first time ever watching the show properly and Im finding it much better than I ever expected. I know its a critically acclaimed show, but my only experiences of it before now were catching it at late night airings of the show at half past 1 on a Tuesday night on BBC2, often straight after a snooker tournament had aired or when I was flicking through the channels. I wasnt ever caught up in an episode, often being put off by the laugh track or the quirky sound effect that punctuated every scene change
I’ve actually only started watching it recently for two reasons
1) I love the Office, its my favourite TV show ever and I always find the mix of humour and emotion just amazing. A few months back I happened upon the above show on youtube, “Ricky Gervais meets….” which sees Ricky meet and speak with his comedy heros. The above episode (part 1 linked, but the other six parts can be found following on from that video) features Larry David who Gervais considers a genius. I’d never heard of this bloke, so I looked him up and saw he was creator of Seinfeld and star and creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I figured hey if its good enough for Ricky its good enough for me. I started to watch Curb and loved it. Its a great show and “Larry David” is one of the great comedy show characters. When I got up to season 7, which is the Seinfeld reunion season, I figured I should watch Seinfeld before that so Id know what was going on.
2) Various American posters on forums I read hail it as one of the greatest shows ever, with SomethingAwful even featuring a thread where people still just quote lines from the show over and over. Even though Goons are fucking terrible with their opinions sometimes, Ive got to say they got this one right. I still dont agree that My Little Pony is one of the best shows ever tho.
Admittedly, some of the episodes do fall flat for me and the show was a bit of a slow burner at the start. However the more and more I watch it the more I find the majority of episodes, while still dated, are just pure genius.
Excuse the terrible quality of the youtube, but the above scene with the faking orgasms had me in stitches. This linked scene was even better (embedding disabled on this one unfortunately).
Ive been watching 6-7 episodes a week, more whenever I have the free time and really enjoying it.
If youre British, and never realised the fuss, its definitely worth checking out. And if youre American, Im sorry for judging you simply by Two and a Half Men.
Alan Partridge is back.
12 new 11 minute episodes written by Armando Iannucci and Coogan have been commissioned by Fosters as part of some new ad campaign
Im excited. Heres the trailer
Ive been watching a lot of TV shows lately, partly because I uploaded a load onto my ipod which means that I can easily watch a half hour show over my lunch.
I figured I’d let you know some of the shows that I like and dont like that Ive watched recently.
The Great – Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Jesus Christ – how have I missed this show? I knew of it, but never felt inclined to watch. However Ricky Gervais has been banging on about it for a while on his blog, and has filmed a guest slot for next season so I figured I’d try it. Possibly one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. I’m halfway through season two and its terrific. Larry David plays a version of himself who always says what he thinks. Its a programme where sometimes you can anticipate the mishaps that are about to happen, and makes you cringe sometimes, but that doesnt make it any less funny as usually its even worse than you imagine.
The Bad – Shit My Dad Says
A show based on a twitter feed? Great! Theres a twitter where a guy posts the weird and funny shit that his dad says and it got commissioned into a TV show with William Shatnar as the titular dad. One episode in and its fucking terrible, the kind of absolute dross that Scotsman would watch. Avoid at all costs
The Amazing – Community
Season 2 started this week and holy shit have I missed it. From the opening 17 seconds I was laughing and it didnt stop till the end. Such a absolutely fantastic show that has created its own reality bubble. Its hilarious, with Chevy Chase on top form, and every character holding their own in the episode. Abed is probably my favourite, relating everything that happens to a tv show or film. I cant do this show justice, its probably my favourite show at the moment, I even watched the 1st series 3 times in the last 12 months.
The Good – Sons of Anarchy
Theres been a hole in my life ever since the Shield finished, and Sons has gone some way to filling that gap. The third season is starting a little slow, but this is still a must watch for me and Rach every week now.
More later probably. I got bored of writing
So screw you Heroes
One of the things I love is injokes, you know, those things where you look at one of your mates, drop a line and both of you end up laughing. It can be as simple as “SORRY CAPS LOCK ON WAS DOING GOLF TIPS” or a classic line from a tv show character.
And Alan Partridge has a ton of them.
I caught up with a few shows and movies on the weekend and thought I’d throw out some thoughts Continue reading
How the fuck did he do that?
